On Monday, December 9, Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN) hosted a crucial Human Trafficking Training session for Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA) staff, facilitated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This training is part of JMAA’s ongoing commitment to actively participate in the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign and to ensure all employees are equipped to recognize and respond to signs of human trafficking.

The Blue Campaign is a national public awareness initiative designed to educate the public, law enforcement and industry partners on the realities of human trafficking. It provides critical tools and resources to identify victims and respond appropriately to potential cases. By partnering with TSA, JMAA is working to address the alarming rise in human trafficking activity, even in smaller airports like JAN, where these crimes are becoming an increasingly visible threat to the community.

Training to Recognize the Signs
During the training, JMAA staff learned to:
• Identify common indicators of human trafficking
• Understand how traffickers use transportation hubs like airports to exploit victims
• Appropriately respond to suspected cases while ensuring the safety of victims and others

This essential knowledge empowers the JMAA team to take swift and informed action in situations where time and awareness are critical.

Earlier this summer, JMAA initiated a soft kickoff to the Blue Campaign by promoting awareness throughout the airport. Educational materials, including signs outlining the indicators of human trafficking and emergency contact information, were strategically placed to reach passengers and staff. These efforts aim to create an environment where potential victims can seek help, and suspicious activity can be reported promptly.

To sustain these efforts, JMAA is committed to holding Human Trafficking Training sessions annually for all staff members. By providing consistent and comprehensive education, the organization ensures that employees remain prepared to identify and address the evolving tactics of traffickers.

At JMAA, we understand the critical role airports play in combating human trafficking and protecting our community. By embracing the Blue Campaign and empowering our staff with knowledge and resources, we reaffirm our commitment to being a vigilant and proactive force in the fight against this heinous crime. Together, we can make JAN a safer space for everyone.
