Jackson Municipal Airport Authority Secures Essential Funding Consideration for Infrastructure Enhancements

The summer kicked off with much more than heat in central Mississippi, as the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority (JMAA) continued on a path to secure up to $5 million in potential grant funding. The grant would be earmarked for critical infrastructure improvements at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN), the busiest airport in Mississippi, as part of the pending Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies appropriations bill. This would mark a significant milestone in the airport’s continuous efforts to provide superior travel experiences for Mississippians and visitors.

On July 25, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a transportation infrastructure and housing measure for FY2025, securing funds for various transportation and community development projects across Mississippi. The measure passed by an impressive 28-1 vote and has moved to the full Senate for consideration.

“This bill outlines specific funding to help communities and programs in Mississippi that can improve the quality of life for our citizens,” said U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. “I’ve worked to ensure this bill responsibly addresses many of the state’s needs, particularly for surface, air and rail transportation projects. While there are more steps in the legislative process, this is a positive move forward for Mississippi.”

JMAA’s Chief Executive Officer, Rosa M. Beckett, expressed deep appreciation for the funding support, emphasizing JAN’s crucial role as the state’s primary commercial airport.

“JMAA’s Board of Commissioners and I are extremely pleased and grateful for this funding. As Mississippi’s busiest airport, these are much-needed resources to enhance our infrastructure and provide an exceptional experience for our passengers,” Beckett stated.

The collaboration among JMAA, Hyde-Smith and others in the Mississippi delegation has been instrumental in securing funds, ensuring that JAN continues to be a key economic engine for the region. JAN generates nearly $2 billion annually within Mississippi, playing a significant role in the state’s economy and serving as a key hub for business and leisure travel, along with vital air cargo operations.

JAN has seen a remarkable rise in passenger traffic over the past two years. In 2023, the airport handled nearly 1.29 million travelers, marking a 5.1 percent increase over 2022 and reaching passenger levels not seen in over 15 years. JAN continues to play a significant role in the state’s air travel, handling close to six of every ten passengers traveling through the state’s seven commercial airports.

With over 60 years of service, the airport’s terminal and infrastructure are in great need of updates to meet growing demands and maintain a seamless travel experience. The potential $5 million in funding will be dedicated to modernizing key areas of the airport to ensure continued safe, efficient and enjoyable service for all passengers.

JAN is served by the four largest U.S. airlines – American, Delta, Southwest, and United – all of which offer superior connectivity to destinations across the United States and beyond via some of the largest global hub airports. JMAA also works closely with federal partners, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration, to ensure the safety and security of all travelers.
